Less than 5% of students were successfully graduating from the Suma High Boarding School. This was due in part to the unreliable power source. On average, the power to the school was interrupted 50 % of the time. This impacted the ability of students to study after sunset (6 pm), which is when most students have time for school work. Additionally, no computers and other equipment can be utilized during these power outages. The goal of the solar power project was to increase the reliability of the electrical power supply to the school campus to allow students to have more time to study and be successful in school. Engineers Without Borders (EWB) partnered with the Suma High School and CLT to install a solar facility on the campus. This project kicked off in 2014. EWB provided the majority of the funding, the technical expertise, and project teams that traveled to Ghana over several stages to assist with the planning, design, and implementation of the project. The facility has been a valuable addition to help address a real problem.
